Tyre recycling with Tyrepower WA

Tyre recycling Australia.

Tyrepower is the largest independent tyre retail chain in Australia. With over 50 independent stores in Western Australia, Tyrepower has a wide range of tyres from top-tier brands such as Continental, Michelin, Goodyear, Dunlop, Toyo, Pirelli, and Yokohama.

Tyrepower, in partnership with the Tyre Stewardship Scheme, aims to reduce the environmental harm brought on by the illegal disposal of used tyres by turning them into valuable materials for new products. Additionally, this develops a transparent and sustainable system for managing recycling and provides industry education, research, and development.

How are car tyres recyclable?

Generally, tyres can be recycled back into three raw materials: carbon, oil and steel. For example, Green Distillation Technologies (GDT) is an Australian company that converts old tyres into steel, oil, and carbon, without producing emissions.

Tyre Stewardship Australia, on the other hand, initiates, develops and funds real-world solutions where Australia's used tyres have become economically and environmentally sustainable.

The most common uses for reclaimed rubber from recycled tyres are:

  • Road surfaces
  • Pavements
  • Playground equipment as well as high-grip mats and surfaces
  • Sporting fields
  • And more

Who is Tyre Stewardship Australia?

The Tyre Stewardship Australia is a not-for-profit organisation established to deliver the National Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme. The aim of the organisation is to:

  • Increase resource recovery and minimise the environmental and human health risks associated with used tyres in Australia.
  • Develop Australia‚Äôs tyre recycling industry and markets for tyre-derived products.

This industry program was launched by the Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt MP, in Somerton, Victoria in January 2014.

The main benefit of the National Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme is to transform waste products into valuable products. This creates new industries and employment opportunities while reducing the environmental harm caused by illegal dumping.

There are different ways of using end-of-life tyres and tyre-derived products. Examples include industrial and commercial flooring; soft fall playground surfacing; road surfacing; brake pads; civil engineering; and fuels for energy recovery.
